- "Adirondack" is derived from an insult. When the Algonquin's were struck with hard times, they occasionally were brought to having to consume tree bark to stay alive. Their neighbors, the Mohawks of the Iroquois Confederacy called them "ha-de-ron-dak" which roughly translates to "eaters of bark", and later evolved into Adirondack.
- The Adirondacks attract 2-5 million more visitors & tourists than the Grand Canyon does each year.
- Half of New York's population of Black Bears reside in the Adirondack Mountains.
- The Adirondack mountains are still growing! At a rate of 1 foot every 100 years.
- The top peak of Whiteface Mountain allows hikers to see a 365 degree view of the Adirondacks, and on a clear day, the chance to see as far as Vermont and Canada
- The Winter Olympics were hosted at Lake Placid twice in 1932 and 1980.
- It is said that the term "Vacation" was coined here, when socialites and wealthy New Yorkers would vacate the city and head to the mountains to relax.
