Korean Cooking Class
Korean Cooking Class with O'ngo Food Communications
Today we take an inside look at a unique activity offered in Insadong, Seoul.
Try you hand at traditional korean cooking in a cooking class led by professional chefs with O'ngo Food Communications.
The classes offered are perfect for beginners, but are still very fun for those who know their way around a kitchen. Each day of the week offers a different menu item to be prepared in class. The day we visited the class was making Jeyuk-bokkeum with Geotjeori & Poktan Gyeranjjim (Spicy Pork Barbeque, with Sesame Salad, and Volcano Steamed Egg).
Before the class, students can accompany O'ngo on a trip to the local market to buy the fresh ingredients used in the class. This offers a deeper look into how the best food is sourced to maximize freshness and taste!
Back in the kitchen classroom, each student or student pair is supplied their own work station, apron, equipment, ingredients, and recipe! You have everything you need to succeed in the class.
The lead chef teaches in the front of the room, where she has the same setup as your station. She will guide you along to follow each part of the recipe explaining things as she goes. One of my favorite parts of the class was hearing all about the history or Korean cuisine, ingredients, and processes. It helps you understand why the recipes and dishes are the way that they are today.
After the chef goes through a "how-to" on each part of the dish, students will then go back to their workspace and complete the task on their own. But don't worry! If you need help or have any questions, the lead chef is right by your side to assist. The whole process was very comfortable, fun and informative! The cooking skills are easy enough to be prepared at home with the right ingredients and tools as well.
Once all of the students have completed their separate dishes, the chef shows them how to plate their meals properly and beautifully. Then, all of the students can bring their delicious creations to the table and eat the meals they have made together! It is the perfect way to end an extraordinary cooking class, by getting to enjoy the new cuisine you just learned all about and how to prepare.
