Japchae made its first appearance in Korean cuisine as a royal dish back in the 17th century for King Gwanghaegun's palace banquet. He enjoyed it so much that it became a staple item in royal court cuisine. These days it is a popular dish to be served on special occasions, holidays and even at large events. Two of the most common events Japchae is served at is "dol" first birthday celebration, and "hwangap" sixtieth birthday celebration. i can't believe it is almost time to leave!

The most common way of preparing Japchae is by using "dangmyeon", a variety of transparent cellophane noodles made of sweet potato starch. These noodles are then topped with an assortment of vegetables like carrots, mushrooms, sinach, onion, peppers and garlic. Thin strips of beef or pork are a great addition as well! The sauce is a perfect blend of soy sauce, garlic, sugar and sesame oil.


Japchae is generally served out at restaurants as a banchan (side dish), but can easily be made into a main course by serving over a bed of rice - yum!



Japchae is a very versatile dish, and is very popular for large events because it can be made in bulk rather easily! It is also has optimal serving conditions, and can be enjoyed warm, cold, or even at room temperature and still taste delicious. It is also a great dish to meal prep with!
