#FoodFeature - Bulgogi

Otherwise known as Korean BBQ, Bulgogi -Bul (fire) gogi (meat) is one of Korea's most favored dishes, and if you've tried it you'll know why. You can find Korean BBQ restaurants all over and even in the US, but if you visit South Korea you can get the real deal (and yes, there is a difference). You will see many restaurants advertising this delicious meal accompanied by endless banchan.

Bulgogi is thin, marinated slices of beef or pork grilled on a barbecue or a stove top.The meat is typically prime cuts of sirloin, rib eye or brisket. The meat marinates in a mixture of soy sauce, sugar, garlic, black pepper and sesame oil that is used to enhance its flavor and tenderness before cooking. The meat can marinade for anywhere between 1 hour to overnight depending on preference, although the pro's go for the latter.

If you prefer the spicier side of life you're in luck! You can make a spicy paste made from chili powder, ride, fermented soybeans, barely and salt, that can be added to the meat. This spicy paste is known as gochujang and is most commonly used in the pork variation of bulgogi to give the dish a kick!

One of my favorite things about dining in Korea is all of the wonderful side dishes you get served with your meal, and bulgogi is no exception. While bulgogi is typically served over or paired with rice, it is typically served with loads of banchan (vegetable side dishes). Some examples of these sides you can expect include kimchi, egg soup, seasoned bean sprouts, radish salad, or a side of lettuce or similar leafy green that is used to wrap the meat and eaten together. When wrapping bulgogi in lettuce it is popular to put a little ssamjang on the two, which is a spicy paste similar to the gochujang mentioned above! While I only mentioned a few banchan options here, there are literally hundreds of variations that can be served!

There are also many different ways to eat bulgogi in Korean restaurants. One of the more popular ways is where you'll be seated at a table that has a grill installed in it. Ordering bulgogi is one of many ways customers can cook their food themselves at the table. When cooked this way, it is commonplace for everyone to share, and pick the meat directly off the grill before eating or serving others. Enjoying a delicious meal with good company is a big part of Korea's culture, especially on holidays or celebrations!

Bulgogi has several variations of the dish, and can even be seen as burgers sold at many fast food restaurants. Where the hamburger patty is marinated in a bulgogi sauce and then topped with onion lettuce and tomato. While visiting in Korea make sure to try as much bulgogi as you can and witness first hand why this dish is loved by so many worldwide!
